Oracle plans to raise its headcount in India to 10,000
this year by employing a further 1,400 staff across 15
cities.
The company's current 8,600-strong workforce is spread across
six locations, but Oracle wants to increase its overall headcount
and establish a wider presence in the country.
The extra staff will work in most business areas, including
sales, consulting, software development and customer support. As
well as supporting local sales, a number of staff will support
world operations.
Oracle’s largest research and development centre outside the US
is already in India, and this is set to be expanded.
Last year, Oracle bought a 43% holding in Indian software
company I-flex to further boost its position in the country.
Both IBM and EDS recently announced they would be employing
thousands more in India, as they cut jobs in western Europe and the
US. The extra Oracle jobs in India are not at the expense of jobs
elsewhere.
Both SAP and Microsoft also recently announced an expansion in
India.
