Intel has unveiled a clutch of new PC platforms and
content deals that will allow users to access more broadband-based
entertainment services.
At the Consumer Electronics Show today in Las Vegas, Intel chief
executive Paul Otellini unveiled two new platforms and several
content alliances for desktops and mobile laptops.
Otellini introduced the company’s new Intel Viiv (rhymes with
“five”) home platform and several US content alliances from the
likes of AOL, DIRECTV, NBC Universal, Turner Broadcasting’s
GameTap, ESPN, Televisa and Eros.
These and other alliances will bring millions of songs, movies,
programmes and games to the PC in 2006, said Otellini.
Intel Viiv technology-based entertainment PCs will help make it
easier for families to download, store, view, manage and share all
kinds of digital entertainment and information on a range of TV,
PC, laptop and hand-held viewing screens, Otellini said.
In addition, the new Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology is
said to improve performance and battery life for the fast-growing
wireless laptop market segment.
Otellini also introduced the Intel Core Duo processor – a
dual-core silicon solution that supports the Intel Centrino Duo and
certain Intel Viiv technology platforms.
“With our new platforms, we are not only boosting wireless
computing, but also advancing digital entertainment a few steps
closer to effortless,” said Otellini.
Intel Viiv technology includes a suite of Intel-based hardware
and software that, along with Microsoft Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2005 software, supports broadband-based entertainment.
Based on a choice of Pentium D, Pentium Processor Extreme
Edition and Intel Core Duo processors, these PC solutions will come
in a variety of designs including all-in-one hybrid TVs and
book-sized PCs.
