Yahoo is set to announce that its e-mail, instant
messaging, photo management and other services will be available on
mobile phones without using a browser.
Yahoo Go Mobile is set to be launched by Yahoo later today. It
is a set of applications that includes Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Messenger,
photo management, a calendar, an address book, internet and image
search facilities, plus news, finance and sports news.
The services are to be preloaded on Nokia Series 60 mobile
phones and will be available in 10 countries worldwide, including
the UK.
Updates to the services will be automatically synchronised over
the air between the mobile phone and a user account held on Yahoo
servers.
In addition, Yahoo Go TV, will be available later this spring.
It will make entertainment content services available on any
PC-connected TV, via a small downloadable “widget” application on
the PC.
These services will include access to content from CNN and MTV,
movie trailers, TV shows, and news, weather, sports scores, and
stock data. The free service will contain ads.
By reducing the need to use browsers, Yahoo is attempting to
deliver faster automatic services to users and gain greater support
for its web portal.
The announcements are expected at today’s Consumer Electronics
Show in Las Vegas.
