Enterprise identity and privacy strategies for an
increasingly regulated business environment were high on the agenda
last week at Burton Group's Catalyst Conference Europe, held in
Munich.
Identity management in particular was identified as one area
where technological developments and tighter corporate governance
regulations have raised the bar for businesses recently.
Burton Group chief executive and research chair Jamie Lewis said
the past three years had seen identity management tools mature to
become a critical service in the business infrastructure.
"In the recent past, firms were approaching us for advice about
the business case for identity management, but these days
enterprises are fully engaged with the issue," said Lewis.
Although firms' data comes under more frequent attack from
external sources, security architects have found that the most
damaging attacks are often internal, and employing software that
can control access based on separation of duties could do much to
mitigate those risks, said Lewis.
"In general the trick for enterprises is to shoot at the right
target - and more often than not that target is an insider," he
added.
