Microsoft has updated the beta of its OneCare Live
security subscription service for consumers, as it prepares to
launch a similar enterprise security offering.
OneCare now scans files received in the MSN Messenger instant
messaging service and also allows users to scan files and folders
for viruses by clicking the right mouse button.
The software also now enables users to make back-ups to external
hard drives, as well as being integrated with the automatic
Microsoft Update service for fixes and feature updates.
In addition, OneCare now assists users in the removal of
products that conflict with it.
By the end of the year Microsoft plans to release an initial
beta of its recently unveiled Microsoft Client Protection product
to protect business desktops, laptops and file servers against
malicious attacks.
OneCare combines anti-spyware software, anti-virus software, a
firewall and several “tune-up” tools for Windows PCs. OneCare will
be launched as a commercial service some time next year.
Microsoft’s entry into the security product market is currently
the subject of an investigation by the European Commission, with
concerns among security software suppliers that its wide Windows
reach and bundled security offerings could squeeze them in the
market.
