The personal and commercial details of around 100,000
Hewlett-Packard users could be sold to the highest bidder later
this month.
A California bankruptcy court is selling the details contained
in a database previously used by the defunct Interex HP user
group.
As well as personal details of HP users, the database is
believed to contain details of the IT configurations of the
companies that individual members work for.
Interex members have protested that the sale contravenes the
user group’s privacy policy, but the group’s £2.4m bankruptcy this
summer means this policy could be ignored, as the court seeks to
raise cash for creditors.
It is believed a US reseller of used HP kit has already made a
bid for the database, which has triggered a bidding war for the
user details.
