Intel has launched its first dual-core server processor
ahead of schedule, and Dell, IBM and Hewlett-Packard have announced
a number of servers that will carry it.
To catch up with dual-core market leader AMD, Intel has launched
a Xeon dual-core processor originally aimed at high-end servers
designed to carry four or more processors.
The “Paxville” processor will now be included in new
dual-processor server models sold by Dell, IBM and HP and
others.
Intel’s first dual-core server product was originally not
planned until the first quarter of 2006.
A second Paxville chip for multi-processor servers will also be
available within 60 days, said Intel.
Intel's dual-core Xeon for dual-processor servers runs at
2.8GHz. Dual-core processors have two processing engines on each
silicon chip to increase processing power a server can achieve.
