Philips is increasing the number of software development
staff at its Bangalore research and development centre from 1,600
to 2,500 by the end of 2007.
The Bangalore facility already contributes around a third of the
software content in Philips’ products and this proportion is set to
increase markedly with the centre’s expansion.
The centre’s work includes designing chips that go into mobile
phones and TVs.
Philip's decision to expand its operations in India comes after
similar recent announcements from IBM, SAP, Alcatel and
Microsoft.
Philips has not said whether its Indian expansion will reduce
the number of software developers it employs in Europe.
