The battle over next-generation DVD formats is heating up, with Dell and HP confirming their support for a different standard to the one chosen by Intel and Microsoft earlier this week.

Microsoft and Intel previously announced they were backing HD-DVD technology because it would make it easier for users to copy films and other data onto a computer's DVD drive.

The pair also said HD-DVD would make it simpler for the industry to distribute hybrid discs containing both high-definition and traditional DVD films.

Dell and HP, however, have accused Microsoft and Intel of spreading inaccurate information, and confirmed their own backing for the rival Blu-ray format.

HP said this week that Blu-ray was a superior technology, offering up to 150% more capacity and better transfer rates.

Michael Dell, founder of the leading PC supplier, said Microsoft had been unwilling in the past to provide any codecs in Windows for previous DVD formats.

Blu-ray is supported by a Toshiba-led consortium.
