Sun has announced the first members of its new Galaxy
server family, which use Opteron processors from AMD instead of
Sun’s own Sparc processors.
The new x86-based entry-level servers are the dual processor Sun
Fire X4100 and X4200 machines, and the single-processor X2100.
The move comes as Sun seeks to offer users more than its
traditional offering of Solaris Unix combined with Sparc
processors, in a bid to better serve users in the x86/Linux and
Windows environments.
Sun is believed to be planning additional Galaxy models that go
up to eight processors and beyond, but no roadmap for these
solutions has so far been announced.
