BEA has released the latest version of its custom application
server platform, WebLogic Server 9.0, which has new features to
reduce the cost of IT projects, and eradicate system downtime.
WebLogic Server is the newest addition to the BEA Service
Oriented Architecture (SOA) product family, which also includes
WebLogic, Tuxedo and AquaLogic.
WebLogic Server 9.0 uses an “enterprise-grade kernel” which
features clustering, security, management, caching and virtual
machine technologies, to boost the performance and reliability of
the applications that run on it.
WebLogic Server also has a multi-programming model interface,
which supports J2EE 1.4, Spring, Beehive, web services and other
programming frameworks designed to lower the costs associated with
building custom applications.
The software features "side-by-side" application installation,
which allows IT managers to upgrade applications which are on a
live server without requiring downtime. In addition, WebLogic
Server 9.0 allows the server itself to be upgraded without
disruption.
WebLogic Server mainly competes for IT manager spend with IBM’s
WebSphere Application Server, which is also based on enterprise
Java.
