Security centre-stage as Oracle releases v2 of 10g

Tuesday 12 July 2005 01:00

Oracle has announced the general availability of Oracle Database 10g release 2.

Oracle said version 2 improved performance, manageability and security.

10g is designed to support grid computing, which enables companies to process large amounts of data on connected low-cost servers.

Andy Mendelsohn, Oracle senior vice-president of database server technologies, said, “Release 2 builds upon the grid capabilities delivered in release 1, while introducing significant new security capabilities.”

10g release 2 adds new forms of data encryption to better protect data against theft.

“Transparent data encryption” enables customers to encrypt critical database data on disk – for example, credit card numbers or social security numbers – without the need to rewrite the applications that access the data. There is also support for the encryption of data on both disk and tape back-up media.

Release 2 supports up to 100 “clustered” or connected servers.

Oracle Database 10g was launched in February 2004, and is used by 40,000 companies, according to Oracle.
