The Liberty Alliance is to form a technical group to address the rising threat of identity theft.

The organisation, best known for its work on developing industry standards to deliver secure online authentication for users, is to form the Identity Theft Protection Group.

The group will aim to find technical solutions to prevent identity theft. Identity theft cases and losses of personal data have recently affected a number of high-profile organisations in the US, with incidents happening at CitiBank, MCI, Lexis-Nexis, Stanford University, Time Warner, Bank of America, and data brokers ChoicePoint.

American Express and Fidelity Investments, already involved in the Liberty Alliance’s online authentication work, are expected to be involved in the new identity theft group.

The first US meeting of the new group will take place next month.
