BT is increasing the data access speeds of its broadband
customers by up to four times at no extra cost as it tries to stave
off increased competition in the broadband sector.
The standard BT broadband service will now have a minimum access
speed of 2Mbps, as opposed to the original 500Kbps - four times
faster for the same price. The Broadband Basic service will see its
speed doubled from 500Kbps to 1Mbps.
The faster access speeds cover 1.4 million existing BT Retail
customers in the business and consumer sector, and new customers
who sign up.
Ian Livingston, BT Retail chief executive officer, said, "Today
we are offering customers up to four times the broadband speed
without charging a penny more. It will allow customers to get even
more from their broadband services for communication, education and
entertainment."
