Business process management will sever the link between
business rules and IT systems, according to Butler Group principal
research analyst Mike Thompson.
The transformation would happen over the next two years, said
Thompson, who is due to speak tomorrow (17 November) at the Butler
Group Business Process Management and Integration Symposium in
London.
Companies already using a business process management approach
included Barclaycard and Visa, said Thompson.
Traditionally, rules to control business processes had been
hard-coded into applications, which made the applications
inflexible, he said.
A better approach is to define the business process first and then
decide on the applications required to complete the process. Rules
that control the business process determine what IT integration is
required.
Business process management technology allows users to change rules
quickly. Tibco is one of the few mainstream suppliers to offer this
type of technology, but Thompson said smaller companies such as
Fuego, Jacada Fusion, Chordiant and Ilog also had viable
products.
l Today, Ilog is launching a .net version of its Business Rule
Management Systems product line, which it said allows users to
implement business processes using Microsoft's applications and
development tools environment.
