Novell will release its new corporate Linux version,
which merges its recently-acquired Linux applications, this
autumn.
Novell purchased SUSE Linux this year, and the previous year
picked up Ximian but has yet to merge the two companies' products
or software.
The corporate Linux operating system, which is being called SUSE
Linux Desktop, has at its core a version of SUSE Linux very similar
to that offered with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. The GNOME
interface and software is being offered - repackaged in the Ximian
Desktop.
Novell predicts that Linux will be implemented extensively on
PCs within 12 months, but Microsoft will offer competition with its
Longhorn version of Windows.
Novell is still deciding what software will be included. Some
companies and products, like RealNetworks and its popular media
player, and Mono, the open-source clone of Microsoft's .Net
infrastructure, have been confirmed; while other software
integration - the Mozilla browser for example - is up in the
air.
