Home secretary David Blunkett launched a trial of biometric identity card technology last week involving 10,000 volunteers. He also announced draft legislation outlining plans for a national ID card scheme.

For the trial, Atos Origin will be installing the equipment and providing software support. NEC will supply its automated fingerprint ID system. Fingerprint capture and facial matching systems come from Identix, and Iridian Technologies is providing iris-recognition technology.

The UK Passport Service has decided to incorporate a facial-recognition biometric chip in passports it issues from 2005 and is considering whether to include a second biometric, either iris or fingerprint information, in later versions, said the Home Office.
