Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has launched a
3.5-inch hard disc drive with a capacity of 400Gbytes, which has
been designed for audio/video applications, and particularly with
digital video recorders in mind.
The Deskstar 7K400 includes a technology called Streaming
Command Set which optimises the drive for storing and retrieving
digital video content. The drives will ship with Parallel ATA and
Serial ATA storage interfaces providing data transfer speed of 1.5
bits per second.
The drive consists of five disc platters with a rotational speed
of 7,200 rpm and an average seek time to retrieve a piece of data
of 8.5 milliseconds.
The new higher capacity enables users to store 400 hours of
standard TV programming, 45 hours of high-definition TV
programming, or more than 6,500 hours of high-quality digital
music, Hitachi said.
