A robot that can recognise and pick up an object has won the annual prize for progress towards machine intelligence from the BCS Artificial Intelligence Specialist Group.

The Mira robot, built by a team at Sunderland University, combines voice recognition, visual recognition and navigation.

"Mira represents a real step forward and provides a foundation for future applications in domestic and commercial robots," said specialist group chairman Max Bramer. "All four finalists demonstrated that much progress is being made in terms of abstract thinking and, excitingly, in terms of actual implementation."
