The lubricants division of oil giant BP has implemented the
latest data warehousing software from Kalido, the software company
that was spun out of rival Shell’s IT department.BP Lubricants, best known for its Castrol
brand of oils, is using the software to underpin its global
management information initiative, Business Intelligence and Global
Standards (Bigs).
The Dynamic Information Warehouse system,
which uses a graphical user interface removing many of the
management issues of data warehousing, provides standardised
information and tracks the performance of different business
functions.
During the pilot phase of Bigs, which has just
been completed, the software provided management information from
data collected from various company systems and helped BP
Lubricants meet diverse local reporting requirements, said Mark
Burrell, Bigs global programme director at BP Lubricants.
“The Bigs pilot is anticipated to be the first
step in providing us with an integrated global model for
consistent, transparent and accessible management information,” he
said. “The flexibility of the Kalido software played a key role in
the success of the pilot.”
Shell Services applied for a patent for Kalido
in 1998 and the first commercial product was launched in 1999.
In 2001, Kalido was launched as a distinct
company from Shell. Business users now include Unilever, Philips
and Cadbury Schweppes.
