The IntelliStation Power 275 from IBM uses the Power 4+
chip, making it IBM's highest-performing Unix workstation, the
company claimed yesterday.
The Power 4+ processor was rolled out across IBM's pSeries Unix
servers earlier this year, and is now making its way down to the
workstation level. Up to two processors at either 1.0GHz or 1.45GHz
can be used in the Power 275 workstation.
The Power 275 also comes with Power GXT4500P or GXT6500P
graphics accelerators, IBM said. Unix workstations are often used
for CAD/CAE (computer aided design/computer aided engineering) work
by design engineers or software developers, and require high-end
graphics cards.
IBM included an integrated service processor into the
workstation which detects problems as they occur in the system and
places a request for service with IBM automatically.
The Power 275 will be available on 25 July 25 for $7,995. This
price includes a single 1.0GHz Power4+ processor, 1Gbyte of memory,
a 36.4Gbyte hard drive, a DVD-ROM drive, the GXT4500P graphics
accelerator, and the AIX operating system.
