IT directors are being urged to work with the government
and suppliers to develop a practical action plan to make the
internet a secure place for online business.
The plan, which is being co-ordinated by IT industry parliamentary
group Eurim, aims to prioritise the technical and legal issues that
need to be addressed to secure the internet. It follows concerns
that security threats are deterring consumers from using online
services and slowing the spread of e-commerce.
The initiative, to be unveiled this week at Infosec, has won
backing from IT users, suppliers, politicians and the Institute of
Public Policy Research.
"We are encouraging senior IT professionals to give their views on
where the balance of responsibility should lie in addressing
criminal activity involving their computer systems," said Philip
Virgo, Eurim's secretary general.
The plan, which is expected to have a direct influence on
government policy, aims to identify clear roles and
responsibilities for government, law enforcement agencies,
regulators and businesses in tackling computer crime.
