IBM is adding an entry-level storage server to its
storage portfolio.
The TotalStorage FastT600, scheduled for release next week,
offers three times the throughput of IBM's previous entry-level
offering, the FastT200.
With expansion units, it scales up to six terabytes of data and
can support up to 42 hard disc drives. The server supports Windows,
Linux, and Unix operating systems from IBM, Sun Microsystems and
Hewlett-Packard, and carries a three-year warranty.
The FastT600 price tag starts at $14,995. IBM is targeting
midsized businesses, emphasising its competitive pricing and
features for easing management burdens.
Those features include IBM's Dynamic Capacity Addition
technology, which allows unused storage to be activated without
stopping operations. Also packaged with the FastT600 is IBM's
FastT Storage Manager software for centrally managing FastT
subsystems, and its optional FastT Service Alert, which notifies
IBM technicians if problems occur.
IBM has given 25 April as the release date for its forthcoming
Tivoli Storage Resource Manager Express. The software is the latest
addition to IBM's Express line of enterprise middleware reworked
for smaller customers. Designed for deployment on single-processor
desktops, the Java-based software will be priced at $65 per
desktop.
