EDS is on the brink of signing a major desktop services outsourcing contract with Barclays Bank.

Barclays is halfway through a major business transformation project that involves the outsourcing of much of its IT and many business processes.

The deal comes as EDS is about to sign a $1.5bn outsourcing contract with ABN Amro, Holland's largest bank. The US outsourcer is also set to announce that a much-delayed payment system for the US Department of Work and Pensions has finally gone live.

A spokeswoman for Barclays confirmed the company has been working with EDS to review the way it offers desktop services but stressed the relationship is still at the feasibility stage. "It is still a project at the moment - no commitments have been made to EDS yet," she said.
