The Government this week launched a safe Internet shopping guide
after research revealed the major factors that are affecting UK
consumers' willingness to embrace online shopping.
The Mori research, based on interviews with 4,028 respondents,
showed that while confidence is growing among Internet shoppers,
some concerns are preventing more people from spending their money
online.
The survey identified the primary concerns as fear of: credit card
fraud; giving out personal details; and that a company may not be
genuine.
In an attempt to dispel these fears, the Department of Trade &
Industry has introduced a new phase of its e-consumer programme to
support its safe Internet shopping message.
This includes online advice, funding the UK end of the European
Extra-judicial Network, which facilitates cross-border redress, and
improving international co-operation against scams.
Consumer minister Melanie Johnson said, "Our checklist for safe
Internet shopping aims to help dispel lingering fears about the
safety of buying goods on the Internet."
