Next generation high-bandwidth networking technology prices will
fall significantly over the next two years, putting 10 gigabit
capacities within reach of the enterprise, a leading analyst has
predicted.
Still used mainly for carrier backbones, 10 Gigabit Ethernet is the
latest in the IEEE Gigabit standards. It supercedes Gigabit
Ethernet.
If predicted price falls take place, businesses will be able to use
the higher-capacity network technology to connect IT infrastructure
between buildings and cater for ever-increasing storage and traffic
demands.
Gartner analyst Ian Keene said that although prices were likely to
drop, businesses should put important IT projects on hold until the
emerging networking technology is cheaper.
"Prices will come down significantly over the next 18 months, but
whether businesses invest in 10 Gigabit Ethernet depends on whether
it is something they need. Although prices will fall, if you have a
need for the technology you should not put off projects to wait for
a bargain."
