UK retailers were last week urged to sign up to the British Retail
Consortium's National Retail Crime Database, which is due to be
re-launched in the next month.
Speaking at the annual Retail Automation Conference, Bill Briggs,
group securities operations manager at electronics retailer Dixons,
said retailers needed to share crime incident data to protect
against rising levels of crime in the industry.
"It is an absolute must for retailers to join the database," he
said. "The more information there is on there, the better it will
be for all of us."
Briggs, who is also chairman of the data and information group at
the British Retail Consortium, said protecting against losses
should not be seen as a competitive issue.
"Selling for profit is a competitive issue but protecting our
profit should not be," he said. "Sharing information will give us
the edge against the criminal community."
