Mission critical server specialist Stratus Technologies has
unveiled two new Intel-based servers running Microsoft's Windows
operating system.
Stratus has started shipping the new ftServer 6500, which can be
configured as a one, two or four processor system, and the smaller
ft5240, which can be configured with one or two processors. While
the servers use widely available Xeon processors from Intel, they
also include Stratus' specialised technology for keeping hardware
up and running.
"These two new models put us at the forefront of Intel's processor
technology," said Larry Sherman, director of technical marketing at
Stratus.
The new systems are targeted at businesses willing to pay a little
extra to keep their business software running at all times. The
beefier ftServer 6500 can handle applications such as supply chain
management, customer relationship management and databases. The
smaller ftServer 5240 is designed to handle e-mail and e-commerce
applications.
An ftServer 6500 with one 1.6GHz Xeon chip, 1Gbyte of memory and
36Gbytes of storage starts at $75,000 (£48,282). A fully loaded
system will cost up to $130,000 (£83,689), Sherman said.
The ftServer 5240 with one 2.4GHz Xeon, 1Gbyte of memory and
36Gbytes of storage starts at $50,000 (£32,189). Both servers ship
with Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
