RSA Security has announced new software to deliver access codes to
mobile devices via short messaging service (SMS).
RSA's Mobile authentication software delivers the one-time access
codes to users' pagers, mobile phones, PDAs or e-mail accounts at
the time of log-in. By entering an ID and personal identification
number followed by the access code, users can then access desired
Web applications.
The two-way authentication system is meant to provide secure remote
access while lowering administration costs and making use of
existing mobile devices.
Aimed at the business-to-business and business-to-consumer markets,
the software provides Web-based administration from a single point
in the network. RSA Mobile is also scalable, handling up to
millions of users, an RSA spokesman said.
The software aims to bank on the growth of text messaging. RSA said
that while there are currently more than 200 million SMS users in
Europe, the US market has yet to experience a serious uptake.
RSA Mobile is based on a subscription plan of between $5 (£3) to
$10 (£6) per user, per year, for every 100,000 users, and will be
available by the end of September, the company said.
