The European Commission has opened the bidding process for private, non-profit making organisations wanting to run the .eu top level domain (TLD) due to go live next year.

The successful organisation will register .eu domain names and settle conflicts where more than one person or organisation claims rights to the same domain name.

The Commission official handling the bidding, William Dee, said that the selection process will be transparent although it does not have to adhere to the strict rules the European Commission sets for public tenders. "This isn't a call for tenders because we are not paying the winner any money, just handing them a concession to run the .eu registry," he said.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) last year gave the go-ahead for the EC to launch the new domain name.
