Users of Microsoft's Express Passport Purchase service have until March 2003 to change payment services before Microsoft discontinues the shopping service.

Microsoft has urged organisations that use Passport Express Purchase on their sites to migrate to its new authentication service, MSN Wallet, which it claims is more secure.

The company has said that since the MSN Wallet service and the Passport Express Purchase service are separate, any consumers who now use Passport Express Purchase would need to sign up for the new MSN Wallet service separately.

Microsoft warned that no information would be transferred between Passport Express Purchase and MSN Wallet. It also said all information in existing Passport Express Purchase accounts would be deleted.

Developed as a secure payment system, MSN Wallet uses triple-DES strong encryption to store payment and address details of customers. Microsoft said data used by MSN Wallet is stored in a database on servers that are located in access-controlled facilities.
