The UK is leading developments in grid computing, experts gathered
at the Global Grid Forum in Edinburgh said this week.
Grid computing, where organisations link networks in order to share
computing power, is popular in academic organisations.
Tony Hey, head of the Government's e-Science core programme, which
is promoting grid technology in the UK, said, "We have a very good
network - Super Janet - and Europe's biggest supercomputer. We are
well-placed to play a major role in the development of grid
computing."
While the key moves are being made in science and academia, Hey
predicted that grid computing would be in the commercial and
business space in a year, allowing interoperability and enterprise
application integration.
John Taylor, director general of the research councils, said the UK
was well placed to reap the benefits of grid computing.
