More cash for UK broadband

Stephen Timms, the new e-commerce and social responsibility minister, said the chancellor Gordon Brown is going to provide "substantial sums of money" for UK broadband development as part of his three-year spending plan due to be launched next week.
Speaking at the UK Online for Business/Interforum E-Commerce Awards last week, Timms said government ministers now recognise that a sound broadband infrastructure is the way to deliver better public services. "That is the reason for the activity we will see in the next few months ahead," he explained.

Mark Smith, head of operations at the Communications Management Association (CMA), said, "The CMA is pleased to see the Government following up on the recommendations of the Broadband Stakeholders Group. Although the timescales are long, we are pleased to see some movement towards investment in public sector-based broadband projects."
