Councils win e-government handouts

In total 64 local authorities will receive £49m over the next two years to help them to use IT to better effect.
Local government minister, Nick Raynsford, said the schemes build on the work many councils are undertaking to make the most of technology to provide better quality and more accessible services as part of the Government's target to e-enable all public services by 2005.
For instance, people in London and North-East England have been provided with smartcards to access and pay for a range of council services, while in Devon, Northamptonshire and Derbyshire access to information on all local council services is possible through a single Web site. Raynsford said, "These are exciting and innovative projects which will benefit local communities and improve the day-to-day running of councils across the country.
