"I think that the big challenge for local government this year is getting an effective outcome to the debate about the draft national strategy for e-government that was recently launched by the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions [DTLR]," said Haslem.
People in local government must respond to the expectations of customers and partners across the public, private and voluntary sectors, he added.
Local government minister Nick Raynsford unveiled the E-gov@local: Towards a National Strategy for Local E-Government consultation document last month. It outlined what action is needed at national, local and regional levels and how the Government will target the bulk of the remaining £165m of e-government funding from the 2000 spending review.

DTLR officials are calling for comments on the proposals by 28 June.
Haslem took over from Robin Carsberg as president of Socitm at the public sector user group's recent spring seminar in Bolton.
