British Telecom is to close 53 of its call centres and cut 2,200
jobs in its continuing drive to cut costs.
"This is not a new jobs announcement. Rather, it's a new detail to
the reorganisation of our customer services operations," said a BT
spokesman.
The call centres will be replaced with 30 customer contact centres
complete with "state-of-the-art technology", the company said, but
it would not give details of the new systems.
"With the way that technology has changed, it is perfectly
reasonable to close some centres and upgrade others. Customers will
experience no change in exisiting levels of service. In fact, when
the new centres are completed in the next two years, customers
should find service to be even better," said BT.
More than 100 call centres, employing 13,600 people, will remain.
