Back-up software manufacturer Veritas Software has released the
latest version of NetBackup.
The new version includes a dashboard-style, centralised monitoring
system, automatic script creation for recovery of Oracle databases,
and a disaster recovery feature that automatically catalogues and
ejects tapes.
Version 4.5 also includes Bare Metal Restore (BMR) software, a
package that Veritas acquired when it bought Kernel Group in
January. BMR automatically takes inventory of the systems on which
it has been installed, allowing for faster disaster recovery
preparation, according to Jerry Hoetger, senior product manager at
Veritas.
Another module, NetBackup Vault, automates the disaster recovery
process. Customers can print reports listing tapes that need to be
taken off-site. The software also automatically ejects those tapes
and reports back which ones are no longer valid for use. It can
also automatically create up to four copies of tapes at one time.
Veritas also has a new version of NetBackup Storage Migrator for
Unix, a storage management product that moves less-frequently used
volumes off disk and onto optical or tape products, thereby freeing
up space.
NetBackup will be available in two versions: DataCenter 4.5, which
will be available in April and starts at $5,000 (£3,526) for
Windows and $10,000 (£7,051) for Unix environments and NetBackup
BusinesServer 4.5 for remote workgroups. NetBackup BusinesServer
4.5 will also be available in April and starts at $1,995 (£1,406)
for Windows and $3,995 (£2,817) for Unix.
