Computer Weekly needs your help to persuade the Government to
review and update the UK's outdated computer crime laws.
Both the police and business say they are hampered by laws riddled
with gaps and loopholes. One of the most glaring omissions is that
under the Computer Misuse Act there is no straightforward way to
bring prosecutions against those who perpetrate denial of service
attacks.
Despite concerns voiced by the High-Tech Crime Unit, the Home
Office has said a review of the legislation is well down its
agenda.
We need your help in gathering evidence to persuade the Government
to give computer crime the attention it deserves. It should do so
in consultation with IT users and in a way that will free them to
protect themselves without exposing them to red tape and
bureaucracy.
To support the campaign, e-mail your comments to CWLaw@rbi.co.uk.
Share, in confidence, your experience of computer crimes. What
weaknesses do you see in current laws and how would you improve
them? We will send an anonymised dossier to the Home Office.
A chorus of influential IT voices have already backed our campaign.
User groups covering billions of pounds of IT spend, IT lobby
groups, MPs, legal experts and suppliers are already onside.
