AMD is rolling out a 1GHz version of its mobile Duron processor.
Compaq is the first major PC vendor to offer systems based on the
processor. The company is offering the chips in configure-to-order
versions of its Presario 700 series of notebooks.
AMD launched the mobile version of Duron, its entry-level
processor, in January at speeds of 600MHz and 700MHz.
The mobile Duron features 192Kbytes of on-chip cache memory and a
200MHz front side bus, as well as support for AMD's 3DNow
Professional technology.
The processors will be available from other vendors in the first
quarter of 2002, according to AMD. Other companies that have
adopted previous AMD chips include Hewlett-Packard and Sony.
The 1GHz mobile Duron is expected to be generally available in the
first quarter of 2002, priced at $160 (£110) in 1,000-unit
quantities.
