Tony Blair's call for government ministers to make a determined effect to cut red tape has been dismissed as rhetoric by the Federation of Small Business (FSB).

Blair this week named 11 regulatory reform ministers, including former e-government minister Ian McCartney, and told them to draw up a range of proposals, "so that we can publish an action plan by the end of the year."

Peter Scargill, national IT chairman of the FSB told CW360: "We need to see the rhetoric turned into speedy action as regulations keep businesses away from chasing orders and employing more people. Our members have seen explosive growth of regulations in the past few years."

The FSB recently highlighted the impact on cash flow and costs of small businesses that have to administer state benefits through the payroll.
