The US division of Japanese consumer giant, Sony Corporation, has
axed the Christmas ad campaign for its e-commerce site,
SonyStyle.com, amidst fears its adverts might not be in keeping
with the Christmas spirit.
According to a Reuters report, Sony pulled the campaign, in
which Santa is held for ransom, after preliminary feedback
indicated consumers might misinterpret the "edginess" of the
campaign. However, the organisation would not disclose how much
money it had spent on the six television commercials which together
tell the story of Santa Claus's abduction from a shopping
centre.
In the series, Santa has "all kinds of nasty tricks" played on
him while being held for ransom by two men. The commercials then
conclude with the message: "We have Santa. Shop at SonyStyle.com or
there will be no Xmas."
