Companies now have an easier option when it comes to managing
mobile devices and the applications that run on them, writes Antony

A Java-based synchronisation and personalisation system from
Elata provides support for devices designed to run on forthcoming
high-speed GPRS and 3G networks. The software can also be run on
existing GSM networks.
The platform-independent Elata Senses product is designed to
integrate with an organisation's existing IT infrastructure and has
gained the support of mobile heavyweights including Symbian.
A firm using Elata Senses could get staff to connect to the
server each morning using PDAs or mobile phones to receive content
updates. If the IT department has developed a new version of a
service tracking application, for example, to schedule customer
visits and to record details of work carried out during these
visits, details of the updated version are automatically entered
into Elata Senses.
When staff connect to the Senses server, they automatically
receive the new application and the old version is removed. Job and
location details are also distributed and staff can use the new
application to record details of time spent on each job and and
resources used or required.
Next morning, when the staff reconnect, Elata Senses issues new
job records and grabs the previous day's job details from the PDA
so they can be processed back at base.
