Fewer than one in four UK firms has a mobile e-commerce
strategy, according to research commissioned for Computer Weekly.
Users cited the pressure of fixed-wire e-commerce projects and
uncertainty about technology as the reasons for caution.
The survey, commissioned by Compaq and E-business Expo 2000,
showed that Wap is the preferred future channel for 22% of
businesses.
Mike Johnston, new economy director at Compaq UK, warned against
complacency. "Wap has given us a glimpse of the mobile internet
opportunity, but everyone would agree it is not the killer
application. But UK businesses cannot afford to sit back and wait
until the technology matures - by that stage it will be too late.
The approach should be similar to working in the internet space -
try it , fix it, analyse it."
