VMworld 2011: Tui solves storage bottleneck with vCenter

Tui Infotec, the IT services arm of travel agent group Tui, is using VMware vCenter to help it identify issues in its IT infrastructure.

 

During the VMworld conference in Copenhagen, Christian Rudolph, infrastructure architect at Tui Infotec, explained how the VMware operations software supplements information from the company's other systems management tools.

Tui's infrastructure is 60% virtualised and comprises two main datacentres, SAP, 800 virtual machines, and an Aix back end. Due to the heterogenous environment, the company used multiple tools to manage the environment. "We had to correlate information from the different tools," he said.

The company found it difficult to pinpoint performance issues and an outage in its storage infrastructure. "It was hard to trouble-shoot with our existing tools because we could not measure end-to-end performance."

Users were reporting sluggish performance on the system, but the management tools did not have enough visibility of the problem. Using vCenter, he said, Tui was able to analyse which areas of its IT infrastructure were playing up. "We have been able to reduce our trouble-shooting time by 50%. We can see which IT department to involve."

In the case of a storage outage, he said, vCenter allowed the Tui IT team to determine the level of normal latency on storage, which has allowed it to send out an alert when the storage latency threshold is exceeded.
