The European Commission has launched a new online database tool to give businesses and citizens information on the different taxes of the EU member states.

The database covers the 500 taxes currently in force and covers areas such as the tax base, main exemptions and rate applicable. The information is based on data provided to the European Commission by the national authorities.

In addition, the database gives information on the revenue generated by each tax. Access is free for all users.

"This information tool gives citizens, businesses, tax professionals and researchers direct access to information that was previously only available piecemeal," said taxation and customs commissioner László Kovács.

The database will be updated every year. Coverage will be extended in the near future to the four member states not currently contained in the database - Cyprus, Ireland, Malta and Portugal.
