C&W business customers given 90 days’ notice, BT moves in

Cable & Wireless has already given several of its business customers 90 days’ notice to find another supplier, following its recent decision to only retain 3,000 large premium business customers.

Cable & Wireless has already given several of its business customers 90 days’ notice to find another supplier, following its recent decision to only retain 3,000 large premium business customers.

It announced last week that it was to cut up to 3,000 jobs in the UK over the next five years, as it looks to concentrate on larger business customers.

C&W said the restructuring would see its business customer base cut from around 30,000 to just 3,000 larger corporate customers.

The uncertainty for business customers has been increased by the fact that C&W bought rival Energis last year, primarily for its business customer base.

C&W said reducing the number of business customers would reduce costs and help boost customer service to those larger companies on more lucrative contracts.

BT has already jumped at the business opportunity thrown its way by C&W, by publicising a helpline number for C&W customers wanting to switch to a new supplier before the 90-day deadline.

Bill Murphy, managing director of BT Business, said, “This uncertain situation could be damaging to a business. I can assure all businesses that BT still wants their custom. The small- to medium-sized business market is one of the most dynamic parts of the UK economy.”

C&W currently employs over 5,500 people in the UK. The company said that it would be reducing the UK workforce to between 2,500 and 3,500 over the next four to five years. Around 350 of these job cuts will take place in the current financial year.

In January, C&W announced that it was splitting its operations into two subsidiaries – international business and UK business. The company also issued a profits warning at the time.
