Vodafone is the first mobile operator to launch a prepay laptop data card.

Users can now access Vodafone’s 3G and GPRS (or “2.5G”) data networks in the UK or abroad by topping up a data card in the same way a mobile phone SIM card can be topped up.

The £199 Vodafone Mobile Connect Prepay 3G data card comes with easy-to-install software, and an initial 10Mbytes of free data access.

After that, it costs users £3.07 per Mbyte of data in the UK and £9.08 per Mbyte when roaming on international networks. All prices include VAT.

Users can top up cards from their phone, do it online or visit a Vodafone retail store.

Vodafone says it currently has 65% 3G coverage in the UK. When not in range of a 3G network, users are automatically transferred to GPRS.
