Stalker Software has rolled out a new version of its enterprise messaging suite featuring support for the telephony standard SIP.
CommuniGate Pro Version 4.2 Real-Time Communications builds on SIP to provide features such as secure instant messaging, voice over Internet Protocol, videoconferencing, whiteboarding and application-sharing using Windows Messenger or other SIP-based clients on Unix, Mac OS X, or Windows.
"SIP essentially is real-time communications," Ali Liptrot, director of marketing, said.
Version 4.2 will enable customers to achieve unified communications by tying SIP-enabled phones and cell phones to other communication modes such as is IM, VoIP, and desktop-sharing, according to Liptrot.
Michael Osterman, president of Osterman Research, said SIP is gaining momentum, both across the telephony industry and in messaging and groupware offerings from heavyweights IBM and Microsoft.
"As many as 80% to 85% of desktop telephone sets sold into the enterprise this year will be SIP-enabled, letting companies integrate telephones with IM and presence," he added.
Another new feature in CommuniGate Pro Version 4.2 Real-Time Communications is an enhanced web mail interface, which is designed to offer end-users a Microsoft Outlook-type experience for web e-mail and calendaring.
Also added to the new version are advanced administrative controls including remote administration capabilities.
