Lucent Technologies has ported its network performance management software to Sun Microsystems' Solaris operating system and will release a new version in addition to existing software for Windows.

Lucent's VitalNet 9.0 software is the latest release of its network management tool, which can be used by service providers and enterprise customers to monitor network performance from a Web-based user interface.

The tool can track and manage the performance of network routers, wide area networks (WANs), local area networks (LANs) and servers.

For the first time, the software is available in a version that runs on the Solaris operating environment, which the company said would suit large enterprises using that flavour of Unix. VitalNet 9.0 for Solaris will require corresponding database software from Oracle.

A previous version of the software is available for Microsoft's Windows 2000 operating system when used with a SQL Server database.
