Floods, power cuts or sudden evacuation could prove disastrous for a startling number of UK companies. But this represents huge potential for the channel.

According to a recent survey by telecoms specialist, Alternative Networks, 52 per cent of SMEs would be forced to act on an ad-hoc basis in the wake of such an event. Of those companies without a continuity strategy, just 20 per cent were looking to implement a plan at all in the future.

"Nobody is immune to disaster, whether that means a power cut that lasts for ten minutes or a flood which means your office is out of service for a week," said Chris Wilson, marketing director, at Alternative Networks.

"A solution is to ensure calls can quickly and easily be re-routed, should access to your office be restricted at any point. Call re-routing, requires the use of non-geographic numbers such as 0800, 0845 and 0870 numbers and can usually be completed within an hour of notification. Unfortunately, companies forget that lost calls equate to lost revenue," he concluded.
